CROSSLINK vol.4: Connecting Singapore University Students and Japanese Companies | Company application is now open!

*Coordinated by One&Co Sales/Marketing intern Ayumi Mitsui (National University of Singapore, Year 1 Business Administration and Communications & New Media)

CROSSLINK is an event aimed to build a bridge between university students studying in Singapore and Japanese companies. Company application for CROSSLINK vol.4 in February 2022 is now open!

In Singapore, a considerable number of local students are interested in Japanese language and society. At the National University of Singapore on its own, more than 2000 undergraduate students enroll in Japanese studies courses every year, with many of them engaging in language and cultural immersion programmes as well as internship in Japan. At the same time, many Japanese companies are seeking to understand the needs, culture, and values of Singaporean youth through interaction with local university students.

Having said that,  it is challenging for both of these groups  to “find the right one” in the process of application and recruitment. Language barriers have always been a major obstacle when it comes to recruiting local universities students. On the same note, local students may be hesitant to apply due to the uncertainty of the company’s culture.

With that thought in mind, the first CROSSLINK was held in April 2021, followed by the second and third session in September and December 2021 respectively. Past attendees include students from well-established universities, such as NUS, NTU, SMU and Waseda University.

One&Co, which started as a business platform to connect Japan and Singapore, is now acting as a community where people and companies can create cross-border connections. Considering the current social context where the Singapore government is encouraging companies to hire more local staff instead of non-Singaporean staff, CROSSLINK has huge potential as a platform to connect local university students and Japanese companies in Singapore.

As opposed to the past three sessions, CROSSLINK vol.4 will include an hour of lunch break where we expect students and company representatives to have cross-idea open conversations, regardless of the differences in age and cultural backgrounds.

Moreover, this time, we will start our session with brainstorming on Singapore’s social issues. Participants would then move on to ideathon as to “how the Japanese company can tackle the social issue with their technology and know-how”. Unexplored issues require brand new ideas and suggestions. This would be an invaluable opportunity for you to learn Singaporean youths’ perspectives on local issues in Singapore. We are looking forward to your application!
